Solitary Retreats

There are several options for practitioners to undertake solitary retreats. These should be booked with John Crook. Please read the details below to familiarise yourself with the facilities and conditions. Options one and three are only open to people who have already undertaken several retreats at Maenllwyd Retreat Centre - this is because of the need to understand the circumstances and facilities there.

  1. Maenllwyd Retreat Hut
  2. Winterhead Retreat House
  3. Maenllwyd Main Buildings

Maenllwyd Retreat Hut

During 2004 the WCF has built a retreat hut at Maenllwyd Retreat Centre, and this is available for solitary retreats, for persons who are already familiar with Maenllwyd and who can safely manage the lighting and heating requirements. It is almost completely self-contained, with built-in cooking and heating facilities, and also running cold water. Toilets are provided in the nearby Chan Hall. It is well insulated and has windows on three sides giving excellent views over the surrounding countryside. The practitioner may meditate within the hut, or on the sheltered verandah. We hope to post some photographs here soon.

Bookings are via John Crook. The charge is £15 per day, payable to the Western Chan Fellowship.

Winterhead Retreat House

Winterhead Retreat House in Somerset offers a rather different solitary retreat experience than Maenllwyd. Read the full brochure for full details, which include personal supervision of your retreat practice by John Crook, and more modern facilities including standard domestic kitchen and showers. Typical durations of retreats are one to six weeks.

Bookings are via arrangements made with John Crook

Maenllwyd Main Buildings

For several years the main buildings of Maenllwyd Retreat Centre, in particular the library, have been used by people familiar with the property for solitary retreats at times when no group retreats are in progress. This provides a solitary environment but with availability of the facilities of the house.

Bookings are via arrangements made with John Crook.
